Graphic Designer
Oceana, Inc.
General Summary

The Graphic Designer leads efforts to create compelling visuals (in print and web) to achieve Oceana’s goal of building a political constituency for the oceans, helping Oceana build the premiere brand in ocean conservation and providing design for Oceana’s magazine, websites, and publications. The Graphic Designer, as time allows, also provides support to Oceana’s campaign and development departments. The Graphic Designer provides design services primarily to Oceana, North America and also provides secondary support to Oceana’s other international offices.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

- Design and layout Oceana’s quarterly magazine, including selecting photos, page design and working with – on occasion – illustrators and photographers.
- Design and layout Oceana’s annual report, including selecting photos, page design and working with – on occasion – illustrators and photographers.
- Provide design support – including infographics - for the websites including Oceana’s organizational blog, and social media channels (cut images, template design).
- Roll out Oceana’s corporate identity throughout the organization – place the corporate ID in every area where there is a visual opportunity (PowerPoint, meetings, etc.).
- Support Oceana’s development department with the development of materials for major donors, the Partners Award Dinner and membership mailings.
- Support, if time allows, Oceana’s campaigns with development of materials, publications, etc.
- Perform additional duties as needed and/or assigned.

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

- Bachelor’s degree in related field and familiarity with magazine layout and design.
- Possess strong basic graphic design skills
- Be conversant in web design
- Understand corporate and brand identity and have some experience/interest in magazine design.
- Good writing, editing and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to participate as a team player to coordinate projects, and work effectively with a variety of staff, freelancers and consultants.
- Must possess excellent organization and time management skills to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and good multitasking skills
- Experience with Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Shockwave and other primary graphic design programs preferred.
- Ability to take initiative in suggesting ways to augment work and responsibilities of position to accomplish Oceana’s goals.
