I’m a freelance copyeditor/graphic designer/print production pro. My work experience runs the gamut from books and brochures to newsletters and ads for corporations, agencies, and publishing companies, as well as under my own banner, GraphicsPlus. I’m looking for a telecommute position as a graphic designer or copyeditor or both on a freelance basis.
IN GRAPHICS:
1. Art Director: I was freelance art director/managing editor for Planet Analog magazine (a monthly) for over four years. The magazine was designed for analog engineers with an emphasis on “how to” technicals and complex charting. The best review I ever received was that I made circuit boards look “sexy.“ I was also art director for five years for The Burge Report, the marketing director’s monthly newsletter for EE Times. I was art director/managing editor for over 50 advertorials for the Travel Group at CMP Publications. As its promotion director, I was responsible for the graphics for all promotional materials, too. I managed a staff of five artists: this included coaching and counseling, weekly production meetings, and reports to the business manager. I built partnerships with printers and other vendors. As circulation promotion manager, also at CMP, I was the copywriter and graphic designer for direct mail over ten publications.
2. Graphic Designer: I’ve designed and produced newsletters, brochures, flyers, media kits, logos, announcements, ads, invitations, etc. I am a specialist in editorial design and production for magazines and newspapers.
3. Mac Production Pro: I work production in InDesign and Illustrator; I am a Photoshop pro—great at retouching and silhouetting. I can figure out production problems; I can do prepress. I love typography. Deadlines do not scare me. I have worked press runs. I like the whole printing process.
IN COPY:
1. Copywriter: As promotion director for the CMP Travel Group, I was responsible for all promotional copywriting and editing over five publications. As circulation promotion manager, also at CMP, I was responsible for all direct-mail circulation copy (graphics, too) across ten plus publications in electronics, travel, information technology, and computers. People tell me my copy is clean, tight, and friendly (sometimes, even witty). And, I was a runner-up in a national Biggest Fish Story contest (no kidding!). I got a free fish dinner.
2. Copyeditor: I’m a senior copyeditor, specializing in academic publishing. I primarily follow CMS editing guidelines, as it is the most popular format, but I also work in AP, APSA, and APA. I use CMS proofreaders’ marks for hardcopy editing, and I work in Word and Acrobat Pro online. I am known to be a gentle cleaner upper of grammar (I seem to get on well with ESL writers and also with those who are pedantically inclined), and while I may be a stickler for agreement and a comma fanatic, I never, ever change the voice of the writer. I am detail oriented and deadline driven. I will be glad to take an editing test for you.
3. Proofreader: For me, that comes with the territory. I line-for-line my jobs (whether I have written them or am just working the graphics) to be sure everything is right before it leaves my station. I am very detail-oriented; proofreading is the most important thing I do before my job goes to press or online. I use proofreading marks following the Chicago Manual of Style.
