Arlen Schumer
Illustrator/graph dsgnr/art director
ARLEN SCHUMER, MFA creates award-winning comic book-styled illustrations for the advertising and editorial markets, is a member of The Society of Illustrators, and is one of the foremost historians of comic book art—Comic Book Artist magazine named him "one of the more articulate and enthusiastic advocates of comic book art in America,” his coffeetable art book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art won the Independent Publishers Award for Best Popular Culture Book, and ABC-TV's 20/20 called him “one of the country's preeminent authorities on comics and culture."
AS ROY LICHTENSTEIN brought comic book art into the fine art world, I've brought it into the commercial art world via my career creating comic book-style art for advertising, editorial and promotional usage, and became a member of The Society of Illustrators in the process. In my twin career as a pop culture historian, author and lecturer, I specialize
in comic book art history, the legendary TV series The Twilight Zone, and the life & music of Bruce Springsteen.

Experience and Accomplishments

2020-present: Created, presented & promoted pop culture history webinars for New York Adventure Club:

Topics covered include the James Bond films, the TV series The Twilight Zone, the music of Bruce Springsteen, the relationship between fine art and comic book art, and animation history.

2015: Conceived, wrote & designed “The Super Type of Ira Schnapp” exhibition for The Type Directors Club of NY

Schnapp was the logo and type designer for DC Comics from 1938-68; 3-minute video of the opening on May 14:

2004-2005: Creative Director, Charlex, New York, NY

Instituted and creatively directed a virtual in-house storyboard and animatic studio. Charlex had previously only shot animatics using inferior artwork supplied by their ad agency clients; I was able to provide, and creatively shepherd, higher quality artwork.

2003: Wrote, edited & designed The Silver Age of Comic Book Art (Collectors Press)
Coffeetable book about eight legendary comic book artists and how their work in the 1960s (“The Silver Age”) reflected not only the changes within the medium, but in American society as well; winner of the Independent Book Publishers Award for Best Pop Culture Book:

2000-2002: Art Director/Copywriter, The Ad Store, New York, NY

As an art director/copywriter, I instilled new action and drama into multiple Ad Store accounts, like creating a James Bond-like character for Reynolds Tobacco, and designing a Twilight Zone-like logo for a Netflix-like site,
