Graphic Designer
Yellow Scene Magazine
Yellow Scene Magazine is celebrating 20 years in 2020 as a local, independent publication who has remained true to real journalism since inception.

We are very proud of the fact we have never once sold our editorial content for advertising, but instead recognize Content is King. Head to our website to read: Your Native Advertising Sucks and Why Content is Still King to learn more about our philosophy.

We work with mostly small businesses but pride ourselves on helping them with their marketing by providing agency-quality design for their ads as well as the magazine layout.

Because we remain true to journalism and design standards, we do not have a pack of VC’s at our door. We do it all self-financed!

We are looking for a regular, freelance designer to assist our art director with overflow. Our publisher has been in media and marketing for 35 years and has a lot to teach - for those willing to learn. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who wants to grow their design layout skills both for advertising and editorial.

What we are looking for:
You love to brainstorm, dwell in the creative process (but not too long) and your creations reflect the wants and needs of the creative team. You'll create eye-catching, award-winning designs that accurately convey the image and message of our clients and the magazine itself; brand-conscious and marketing-focused work; inspired, smart illustrations and designs that reflect the editorial message. Pride and a sense of passion must exist within this job. While helping to ensure deadlines are met, this artistic eye will also understand the fine line between the conviction in their work and flexibility to work under deadlines in a fast-paced, highly pressurized environment. Of course, you know the ins and outs of the Adobe suite and are well-versed in typography and layout.

We prefer to pay by the piece and will need to discuss price lists for your services. If you are in the $ 65-hour range, (congratulations, we know you have earned this), you are well out of our budget.

**We are used to paying approx. $125-$250 for an editorial feature design (not copy placement-design only) and approx. $35-$45 for an ad design. A good ad should take approx. an hour to layout, copy and art direction will be provided.

Please visit our website and review our Marketing Guidebook as well as Media Kit at to learn more about us.

All applications must include samples of your work.
