Crystal Bao (2004) is an award-winning illustrator based in New York City who is currently pursuing a BFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Originally from Shanghai and educated in London (2019 to 2022), she creates bold, imaginative work across advertising, editorial, murals, toy design, and children’s publishing. Her art explores identity, emotion, and curiosity, blending vivid color, surreal storytelling, and playful ideas. Crystal loves science fiction, fantastical narratives, and drawing anything that fascinates her, from small daily details to expansive imagined worlds.

Honors include Creative Quarterly 77 Professional Illustration Category Winner 2024, Applied Arts Student Awards Winner 2025, the Gilbert Stone Scholarship 2025 (SVA Illustration Dept., awarded to five students for outstanding work), World Illustration Awards Advertising New Talent Longlist 2025, and iJungle Illustration Awards New Talent Merit Award 2024. Her work appears in Creative Quarterly Annuals 2024 and 2025, the Applied Arts Advertising and Student Awards Annual 2025, and Visual Opinion Magazine. She has been featured by Shoutout LA, LA Voyage, and Bold Journey.

Crystal has collaborated with Live Nation, the Society of Illustrators, Visual Opinion, and We Independent, creating campaigns, editorial features, and branded illustrations. She is currently the Creative Director and Concept Artist for the in-development game Feather Land, now available to wishlist on Steam. Crystal also creates murals and is expanding into designer toy creation. She is seeking collaborators across brands, publishers, and fellow artists to push visual storytelling in print, public art, products, and immersive experiences.

Crystal aims to build a distinctive visual universe combining sci-fi imagination, emotional depth, and playful surrealism, connecting with audiences through both commercial partnerships and personal creative projects.
